49ers’ Trent Williams makes NFL history with seventh team captain selection

The San Francisco 49ers truly value the importance of offensive tackle Trent Williams to the team. For the seventh time with the Niners, Williams has been named a captain, as announced by the NFC West team on Monday.

In fact, this is the second time that Williams has been named a captain by a team for at least seven times, according to Pro Football Talk. He is also the only player to ever have that honor in league history.

“The 49ers have chosen the same eight team captains this year as they had last year. That means Trent Williams has a distinct honor in NFL history: He has now been a team captain seven times for two franchises, in San Francisco and Washington,” Pro Football Talk shared in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).

Williams started his NFL career with the Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders) in 2010 and was a captain for them in seven seasons. The same qualities that made him so respected by his Washington teammates have seemingly carried over to San Francisco, where he continues to be revered, on and off the field.

Apart from Williams, the other San Francisco team captains are tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner, quarterback Brock Purdy, defensive lineman Nick Bosa, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, running back Christian McCaffrey and defensive back Deommodore Lenoir.

The 12-time Pro Bowler and three-time First Team All-Pro Williams, who had a historic contract extension with San Francisco in the offseason, looks to continue living up to expectations. He and the 49ers are set to kick off their 2026 NFL campaign on Thursday, when they square off against NFC West rivals Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
