Charles Barkley believes Stephon Castle-Dylan Harper are next Stephen Curry-Klay Thompson
The San Antonio Spurs reached the NBA Finals this past season, the first time since 2014. As the Spurs continue their ascent in the NBA, part of their future success hinges on young guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. In fact, former NBA star turned analyst Charles Barkley believes the Spurs’ duo has the potential to become just as good as the former Golden State Warriors backcourt pairing of Stephon Castle and Klay Thompson.
During a recent segment of ‘The Bill Simmons Podcast,’ Charles Barkley made the case for the Spurs’ backcourt of Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle are on par to be the top guard duo in the NBA for the next decade.
“Those two guards, I don’t want to see them for the next 10 years if I’m a guard in the NBA,” Barkley said. “Harper and Castle, if I’m a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them boys for the next 10 years. They’re gonna be the new Steph and Klay.”
Obviously those are lofty expectations considering the fact that the Curry and Thompson backcourt are considered among the best of all time, and won four NBA championships together in five trips to the NBA Finals.
But Castle and Harper certainly have the makings of being the top guard pairing in the league for the next several years.
This past season, Castle appeared in 68 games in his second year at just about 30 minutes per game. He averaged 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.1 steals with splits of 47.1 percent shooting from the field, 33.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 73.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
Harper appeared in 69 games as a rookie at a little over 22 minutes per game. He averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists with splits of 50.5 percent shooting from the field, 34.3 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 75.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
