Browns’ Todd Monken reveals unique approach to naming 2026 captains

Todd Monken is taking a unique approach to the captains the Cleveland Browns will have going into the 2026 NFL season.

Monken is preparing for the first year of his head coaching career in the NFL. He has served multiple roles in college football and the professional level, finally getting his first head coaching gig in the NFL with Cleveland hiring him in January this year.

Cleveland is going through a rebuild, having traded away star defender Myles Garrett this offseason. Boasting plenty of young talents, the head coach will take a different direction with regards to the captainship.

“Browns coach Todd Monken said the team will have weekly captains — 2 on offense, 2 on defense and one on special teams — chosen by coaches. At the end of the season, the team will vote for the 2026 season captains,” reporter Daniel Oyefusi wrote.

“I think we have a fairly young team. I’m not ready to name guys that are permanent for us,” Monken said.

What lies ahead for Todd Monken, Browns this season

Todd Monken understands that the Browns will need to punch above their weight to make noise in the AFC. This upcoming season will be intriguing for Cleveland to see who rises as the best of the crop.

When it comes to quarterback, Monken committed to Deshaun Watson as the starter. It is possible that can change if Watson underperforms significantly, paving the way for Shedeur Sanders to possibly take over.

The Browns will attempt to improve on their 5-12 record from 2025. They also intend to return to the playoffs after a two-year absence, and end their 33-season division title drought, having last won the then-AFC Central in 1989.

Cleveland will have the first two games of its 2026 campaign start on the road. They take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET before facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. ET.
