Why Von Miller chose Cowboys after picking Commanders over Seahawks in 2025

Linebacker Von Miller is returning for his 15th season in the NFL, this time signing with the Dallas Cowboys. He firmly believes in what the Cowboys are building.

When Miller signed with the Washington Commanders in 2025, he called his shot, thinking they’d be Super Bowl contenders. It didn’t work out, as his other option in the Seattle Seahawks did end up winning it all. This time around, Miller is once again confident and believes his next team is on the precipice of greatness, ESPN’s Peter Schrager said on the Pat McAfee Show.

“He had multiple choices this offseason and he chose Dallas,” Schrager said. “He’s picking Dallas because he thinks they can win.”

The Cowboys haven’t made the playoffs the last two seasons. While they earned a berth every year from 2021-2023, Dallas never advanced past the Divisional Round. It’ll take quite the leap to become true contenders, and Miller won’t do it on his own. But the franchise believes they’re primed to go on a run in 2026.

Over his 17 games with the Commanders in 2025, Miller put up 26 tackles, 15 quarterback hits and nine sacks. If he were playing on the Cowboys, the linebacker would’ve led the team in sacks and tackles for a loss. Miller is coming to Dallas with 138.5 career sacks over his 203 games in the league, making eight Pro Bowls, earning three All-Pro nominations and winning two Super Bowls.

The linebacker may be in the twilight of his career, but he’s proven to have plenty of gas left in the tank. The Cowboys are now counting on him to play an impactful role on their defense.
