49ers’ Brock Purdy gets expected preseason plan for Chargers game

When the San Francisco 49ers opened their preseason, quarterback Brock Purdy found himself on the bench. It doesn’t appear like that will be the case in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t give an official ruling on Purdy’s status. But it seems quite clear he and other starts will be getting some reps in against the Chargers, via Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

“49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says he expects “a number of starters” to play Thursday night,” Wagoner wrote. “Said there’s a “good chance” that includes QB Brock Purdy.”

The 49ers offense is sure to look a lot different in 2026. San Francisco added wide receivers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel in free agency before drafting De’Zhaun Stribling. While the former two pass catchers may be veterans, the franchise wants Purdy to get as many reps as possible with both before the season starts. Even if Samuel and Evans aren’t playing, the 49ers want to see their quarterback in action.

After a run to the Divisional Round in 2025, Purdy is attempting to take San Francisco to even greater heights in 2026. He only played in nine games during his most recent campaign due to injury. But when healthy, Purdy went 7-2 as a starter while throwing for 2,167 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

It may be the preseason, but it’s still live game action. Purdy seems in line to get his first taste of it in 2026 in Week 2. While the 49ers would like to win, they’ll be more focused on how their starting quarterback leads the offense when he’s on the field.
