Craig Counsell shares Daniel Palencia, Matt Shaw injury updates before White Sox game
The Chicago Cubs need as many healthy bodies as they can as they fight for a playoff spot. They’re also in the midst of a cross-town series against the 1st-place Chicago White Sox, winning 7-5 on Monday.
On Tuesday, before the second game at Wrigley Field, manager Craig Counsell provided a status report on pitcher Daniel Palencia and third baseman Matt Shaw, per Vinnie Duber of The Chicago Sun-Times. Counsell said Palencia just completed his minor-league rehab assignment and “will be active soon.”
Meanwhile, Shaw will begin his rehab assignment in Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday.
In June, the Cubs lost Palencia to an elbow injury. He missed two months and recovered in Triple-A Iowa. During his assignment on Aug.16, Palencia struck out the side and was clocked at 100 mph.
Meanwhile, Shaw is making steps to return to the roster after suffering a sprained left hand and wrist on June 28. He had made progress in facing high-velocity pitching machines during his recovery, enough to send him to Iowa.
The Cubs are currently 73-53 and trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by 4.5 games in the National League Central Division. At the same time, the Cubs are leading the National League Wild Card standings by five games over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Injuries have hampered the Northsiders during August. Shortstop Dansby Swanson went out with a left oblique strain. Also, pitcher Edward Cabrera was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right-hand blister.
The Cubs will play against the White Sox on Tuesday at 7:05 pm CST/8:05 pm EST at Wrigley Field.
