Dodgers making Emmet Sheehan roster move before Rockies game
The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly promoting starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan to the big league roster once again ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies, Jack Harris of the California Post reports.
“Emmet Sheehan is getting called back up by the Dodgers, source tells @capostsports,” Harris wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Sheehan is in Denver today, two weeks after being optioned to get a ‘reset’ in triple-A.”
As Harris mentioned, Sheehan was demoted to Triple-A in early August after struggling for most of the season with the Dodgers. It was a whirlwind beginning to the month for him, as initial reports suggested Sheehan was included in the Dodgers’ Tarik Skubal trade with the Detroit Tigers. The right-hander was ultimately not part of the deal, but was optioned to Triple-A after the move.
Sheehan has spent the past couple of weeks in the minor leagues and is now set to return to the big league team. It seems as if Sheehan will be used as a long reliever in the bullpen for now.
“With a good amount of scheduled team off days coming up, Sheehan will be used to give a taxed bullpen extra length,” Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
It remains to be seen what his specific role will be, however. He could serve as an opener, or he could be an option to pitch after an opener. Sheehan also may just be another bullpen arm who can give the team multiple innings if necessary. Either way, he will give the Dodgers’ bullpen additional rest, which will prove to be important in the postseason.
