Mets announce 2 roster moves amid pursuit of playing spoiler

The New York Mets are not expected to reach the postseason. They have struggled all season and are currently one of the worst teams in the National League. The Mets could still play the role of spoiler when facing contenders, however. They announced two roster moves on Tuesday amid their pursuit of playing spoiler. Right-handed reliever Austin Warren has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list while right-handed pitcher Chayce McDermott has been optioned to Triple-A.

Warren has appeared in a total of 26 games with New York this season. He pitched to a 4.63 ERA during that span. Nevertheless, he will provide the Mets’ bullpen with additional depth, which certainly never hurts to have.

McDermott made just two appearances with the Mets after being acquired by New York from the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Ben Rortvedt before the MLB trade deadline.

This Mets ball club entered the season with lofty expectations. However, things have not gone according to plan. They are 57-69 at the moment, which has them sitting in last place in the National League East standings. They have the third worst record in the National League and sixth worst record in all of MLB at the moment.

Playing the role of spoiler remains realistic, though. They will have an opportunity to do exactly that on Tuesday night against a San Diego Padres team that is battling for a National League Wild Card spot. New York earned a 2-1 victory against San Diego on Monday. The Mets will look to win back-to-back games against the Padres on Tuesday night at 7:10 PM ET.
