Why Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte is headed back to Arizona after saga in Boston
The Arizona Diamondbacks arrived at Fenway Park on Monday to begin a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Although All-Star infielder Ketel Marte reportedly traveled to Boston, he did not arrive to the game. The reason for Marte’s absence was uncertain, but he was placed on the restricted list. On Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reported that Marte was returning to Arizona to undergo an MRI on his knee.
Perhaps the entire situation was strictly injury-related? It remains to be seen, but players are not often placed on the restricted list due to an injury. When asked about the situation on Monday, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo shared an update.
“All I know is that he’s dealing with a personal issue,” Lovullo said, via Cameron Cox of 12 News. “We’re trying to figure that out. He didn’t show up today and he was put on the restricted list. That’s as much as I know right now… I knew that there was something going on today when I met with you guys, but I still believed he was gonna be here and he just didn’t show up.”
Now it seems as if Marte is battling a knee injury, but Lovullo initially said the infielder was dealing with a “personal issue.” The hope, of course, is that everything is okay with Marte.
Updates on the situation will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks will continue their series with the Red Sox on Tuesday night after losing 11-1 on Monday.
