Sabrina Ionescu to make injury return for Sky clash
The New York Liberty were without star guard Sabrina Ionescu for their last game due to a foot injury she had suffered during the team’s Aug. 13 win against the Los Angeles Sparks, but the pathway is cleared for her to make her return to the lineup for the Liberty’s game against the Chicago Sky on Tuesday.
Sabrina Ionescu was officially upgraded to available on the Liberty’s injury report for their game against the Sky, a welcome sign for the team. She initially exited the win against the Sparks after sustaining the injury, but was able to come back into the game while finishing with a team-high 20 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals in 33 minutes of play.
Ionescu had dealt with injury issues at the start of the season, but has since been available for the Liberty. The four-time All-Star has appeared in a total of 23 games this season at a little over 30 minutes per game. She’s been averaging 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists with splits of 42.1 percent shooting from the field, 32.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 90.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu is now in her seventh season in the league. She helped lead the Liberty to the their first ever championship in franchise history during the 2024 season.
But while the former Oregon star is set to make her return to the lineup, the Liberty will still be without two other key players in Satou Sabally and Leonie Fiebich, both of whom have already been ruled out for the Sky game.
