Giants’ Najee Harris signing shows how they really feel about Cam Skattebo

Recently, reports emerged that the New York Giants had met with former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris in free agency as training camp continues. Then, on Tuesday, it was announced that the Giants would be signing the Alabama standout to a contract as the upcoming 2026 NFL season approaches.

The signing of Harris gives the Giants some added depth in their running back room ahead of the new season, and comes in the wake of an injury sustained by Dante “Turbo” Miller that could affect his playing status moving forward.

However, not everyone is convinced that the two events are correlated.

“I don’t view this as related to Turbo’s injury. If they were looking for someone to take Turbo’s snaps this week they wouldn’t sign a 28-year-old coming off a major injury. A healthy Harris will push for a real role in this backfield,” reported Dan Duggan of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, Harris is coming off a brutal Achilles injury that he suffered last year as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, where he spent one season before his contract expired. When he was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris was a reliable running back who was great in yards after contact and finding open seams in the defense, but it remains to be seen how much he will have left to contribute with his advanced age and injury history.

Meanwhile, the Giants’ decision to sign Harris might not say great things about how they view last year’s standout rookie Cam Skattebo moving forward. Skattebo made some electric plays for New York in his first season out of Arizona State, but he ultimately ended up suffering a season-ending injury against the Philadelphia Eagles that cut his rookie campaign short.

While Skattebo’s violent running style is part of what makes him unique, it also opens the door for plenty of future injury concerns, so the fact that the Giants are bringing in an established veteran at this point in training camp could hint that they don’t have full trust in Skattebo to stay healthy moving forward.

New York currently has several running backs on the roster, some of whom are expected to be cut before the regular season gets underway on September 13 with a home game against the divisional rival Dallas Cowboys.
