Returning QB1 involved in bloody training camp brawl as teammate left nursing head injury

Day 13 of training camp saw the Denver Broncos have their first real scuffle, and quarterback Bo Nix was at the epicenter of it.

QB’s are often considered untouchable during 11-on-11 drills, with their health being crucial for each team’s respective regular seasons.

A break of this rule has already caused a huge brawl at Pittsburgh Steelers camp, and it’s done the same at the Broncos.

Tensions were already high, with rookie tight end Justin Joly colliding with linebacker Taurean York which saw words exchanged earlier in practice.

Things would only intensify from there.

Defensive lineman Malcolm Roach and outside linebacker Nik Bonitto collapsed the pocket so much that Nix was knocked down, marking the second time Roach has taken the QB down.

DNVR’s Zac Stevens described Nix as ‘p****d’, as the quarterback stood up and launched the ball in anger.

Bonitto and his quarterback exchanged words before he was sent to the sideline to cool off.

A couple of plays later, Nix threw an interception to linebacker Alex Singleton.

The ball was stripped on Singleton’s return, and a ‘melee’ ensued, according to KUSA-Tv’s Mike Klis. Nix had to be held back by his teammates after he pulled Bonitto off the pile via his leg.

Things eventually calmed down, but the dust-up left offensive lineman Calvin Trockmorton bleeding from his face. He was swiftly accompanied by trainers to the locker room.

Nix reacts to Broncos training camp fight

It’s crucial for Nix to avoid hitting the turf, given the fact he is recovering from a fractured ankle injury against the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs.

It was an injury that ended Denver’s Super Bowl dreams, as they would go on to lose to the New England Patriots with back-up QB Jarrett Stidham under center.

Nix, who is entering his third season in Denver, was welcome of the fight at training camp.

“I love it, it’s football. It’s getting me ready for the games coming up,” Nix said, via USA Today.

“It’s a physical practice out there played by physical people. It got intense, and we were just really enjoying it.

“Sometimes during the dog days of summer, practice gets long and the intensity runs high.”

The intensity signals a team eager to bounce back following last year’s playoff heartbreak.

All eyes will now turn to Friday night’s preseason matchup at home against the Green Bay Packers, where Denver will look to channel that practice-field aggression against non-teammates when they host Green Bay.
