Why 49ers’ Mike Evans left Chargers joint practice early amid injury concerns

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been held out throughout training camp due to tightness. Now, wide receiver Mike Evans is dealing with the same ailment.

Evans was forced to leave practice early on Tuesday with what head coach Kyle Shanahan described as tightness, via Matt Barrows of the Athletic. He continued to watch the rest of practice from the sidelines.

The 49ers are likely being cautious when it comes to their new wide receiver. At this point in his career, it’s not like he has much left to prove in training camp. Furthermore, they want him to be as healthy as possible come regular season.

But like McCaffrey, San Francisco will now be paying close attention to Evans. His practice plan may be altered with his newfound tightness. Ultimately though, the 49ers will be optimistic his premature practice exit wasn’t due to a serious concern.

The 49ers are relying on hefty production from Evans after signing him to a $42.5 million contract. He has spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to this point, appearing in 176 games. Overall, Evans has caught 866 passes for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns. He is a six-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion. The receiver also set NFL history by breaking 1,000 receiving yards the first 11 years of his career.

Signing with the 49ers, Evans clearly believes San Francisco has what it takes to compete for a Super Bowl. Once he is past his tightness, the wide receiver will re-focus on helping his new franchise reach their lofty expectations.
