Saints work out former Steelers, Bears WR after Jordyn Tyson injury
Chase Claypool is not finished trying to work his way back into the NFL. The New Orleans Saints worked out the former Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears wide receiver as they evaluate their options following Jordyn Tyson’s injury, Ari Meirov reported.
Claypool once appeared destined to become one of the league’s rising receivers. The Steelers selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he immediately made an impact by catching nine touchdown passes during his rookie season.
That early success did not last. Claypool eventually left Pittsburgh and spent time with the Bears, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. His most recent regular-season appearance came with Miami in 2023, when he recorded eight receptions for 77 yards and one touchdown.
Now, Claypool is attempting to revive his career in New Orleans, or anywhere that will give him a shot. The Saints’ interest makes sense given the uncertainty surrounding Tyson. Tyson is expected to miss around two months. The good news is that he will return this season. Adding another experienced receiver could provide useful depth, especially this close to the beginning of the regular season.
Claypool would need to prove that he can stay healthy, contribute consistently and earn the coaching staff’s trust. However, his size, athletic ability and previous production make him an understandable player to evaluate.
At his best, Claypool looked capable of becoming a matchup problem for opposing defenses. The Saints are not counting on him to rediscover that form yet, but this workout could represent his only chance to return to the league.
