Rockies All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman lands on IL with shoulder injury

While 2026 has been another down year for the Colorado Rockies, catcher Hunter Goodman has served as a clear silver lining. But now, Colorado will be without their backstop for the foreseeable future.

The Rockies have placed Goodman on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain, the team announced. Fellow catcher Braxton Fulford has been recalled from Triple-A.

Goodman was scratched from four straight games before being placed on the injured list. There still isn’t a definitive timeline of how long the catcher will be out. Still it was clear Goodman was dealing with a not-so short-term injury. He’ll now take a full step back and focus solely on rehabbing his injury.

Losing for Goodman for any amount of time is a massive blow for the Rockies. Over his 111 games this season, the catcher has hit .251 with a career-high 34 home runs and 69 RBIs. Goodman was nominated to his second-straight All-Star Game for his efforts. Furthermore, he leads Colorado in both home runs and RBIs.

A number of teams around MLB, including the New York Yankees, tried to make a play for Goodman at the deadline. But the Rockies held firm, instead deciding to build around him. Not set to be a free agent until 2030, perhaps Colorado thinks he could lead their next generation. But if the losses continue a trade may become inevitable.

That will be a future problem for the Rockies. For now, they just want Goodman to be healthy. He’ll now hit the IL hoping his stint on the shelf isn’t too lengthy.
