Red Sox’s Chad Tracy shares latest update on Roman Anthony’s injury recovery

The Boston Red Sox are moving closer to getting Roman Anthony back in action in the big leagues.

The 22-year-old outfielder Anthony has not played a game in the majors since early May after suffering a finger injury. He remains on the team’s 60-day injured list, but he’s already playing in the minors for a rehab assignment with Boston’s Double-A affiliate Portland Sea Dogs.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy provided an update on Anthony’s injury recovery before Tuesday’s game against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.

“Today he’s playing for sure. Tomorrow is already scheduled as a hybrid day where it’s like he’ll possibly play, possibly not,” Tracy said (h/t Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com).

Tracy also noted Boston’s careful approach in Anthony’s rehab assignment.

“We’re just gonna see how he feels because he’s going to have a full day of BP on the field and his first game. We’ll just see how he feels. There’s still times where if he gets a little soreness, is it better to just take that day off and resume the next day? It could go either way.”

The Red Sox placed Anthony on the injured list after he sufferd a sprained ligament in his finger, which made his 2026 campaign tougher.

Anthony was already struggling at the plate before he suffered the injury, as he’s only slashed .229/.354/.321 with just a home run and five RBIs in 30 games in his second season as a big league. In 2025, he turned a lot of heads by hitting .292/.396/.463 and recording totals of eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 71 games.
