Alpha Phi Alpha member lands huge role in Netflix, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married

An Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity member and HBCU alumnus is getting a huge opportunity in the latest Tyler Perry film. According to a post by the fraternity on social media, Derrick King is set to play Nick, placing him alongside Howard University alumna Taraji P. Henson. King is a Clark Atlanta University alumnus, building a significant portion of his acting career at the institution.

Since graduating from Clark Atlanta University, King has built a career spanning film, television and streaming. He now resides in Los Angeles, where he has continued to add credits to his résumé, appearing in episodes of Paramount+’s “The Game,” Starz’s “Run The World” and CBS’s “NCIS: LA.” He now adds this Tyler Perry role to that list, sharing the screen with an Oscar-nominated actress with HBCU ties in Henson.

He also made a name for himself in 2010 following his initiation into Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity as he hosted the BET Black College Tour, a popular feature on the channel in the early 2010s. While at Clark Atlanta University, he also appeared in the web series “College Boyfriends,” a widely popular series set at Clark Atlanta University during his time there. He starred as Sean Mitchell in the web series, appearing in eight episodes from 2013 to 2015, per IMDB.

King is still active in the HBCU community, even as his career as an actor continues to flourish. In 2025, he joined Howard University as an intro to TV and film professor. He now finds himself a part of the third installment of a popular Tyler Perry film premiering on Netflix on September 9th.
