A Different World star to release book about career
A former A Different World star who is set to return in the Netflix sequel series is releasing a book in 2027. Legendary actress and dancer Jasmine Guy is set to release her book A Different Girl in February 2027. Breck Privilege Publishing, a division of Simon & Schuster launched by The Breakfast Club host Charlemagne Tha God in partnership with Atria Books, will release the book.
Jasmine Guy, best known for playing Whitley on A Different World and the subsequent Netflix sequel series premiering on September 24th, details her journey from a childhood near Atlanta’s Morehouse and Spelman campuses to a career spanning dance, Broadway, and Hollywood. Co-written with her daughter, Imani Guy Duckette, the book traces Guy’s path from joining Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at 17 to her breakout role in Spike Lee’s “School Daze” and her eventual rise to stardom on “A Different World.”
The memoir also addresses her struggles with depression, self-image and racism in the entertainment industry, along with her relationships with contemporaries including Whitney Houston, Debbie Allen and Tupac Shakur, per the description of the book on Simon & Schuster’s website.
Charlemagne spoke about his reasoning behind working with Guy on the project.
“We’ve known the legendary Jasmine Guy as an actress, dancer, singer, director and, of course, the woman who gave the world the unforgettable Whitley Gilbert. But you can know somebody’s work and still not know the woman behind it. A DIFFERENT GIRL is Jasmine’s journey. The art. The fame. The family. The love. The motherhood, and all the becoming that happens in between…THIS is why we built Black Privilege Publishing. Our stories deserve to be told with intention and presented to the world like the valuable cultural currency they are.”
The book is set to be released on February 9th, 2027.
