Why Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama actually had fun facing Timberwolves in Semifinals
The San Antonio Spurs are officially back in the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017, and Victor Wembanyama is having the time of his life. After the Spurs dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves 139-109 on Friday night to clinch the series in six games, the French phenom was basking in the defensive masterclass his team just put on.
While most superstars crave the spotlight for their scoring, Wembanyama finds his joy in the grind.
“This series was probably the most fun I’ve had on defense,” Wembanyama said during his post-game press conference. “Like everybody was connected… And that’s the most fun I had on defense.”

That quote should terrify the rest of the NBA. Coming from a guy who already plays like a defensive wrecking ball, hearing that he’s actually enjoying the process of shutting teams down is a scary thought. The Spurs’ defensive synergy in Game 6 was an absolute clinic. They stifled the Timberwolves from the opening tip, eventually coasting to a 30-point blowout at the Target Center.
Wembanyama didn’t even need a massive scoring night to dominate. He finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks in just 27 minutes. He played the role of the ultimate deterrent, forcing Minnesota into hesitant drives and contested jumpers all night. Meanwhile, rookie Stephon Castle led the offensive charge with a massive 32-point, 11-rebound double-double, and De’Aaron Fox added 21 points and nine assists.
The win sets the stage for a massive showdown against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder starting Monday. For the Timberwolves, it’s a long walk to a familiar offseason. But for Wembanyama and the Spurs, the fun is clearly just beginning. If they stay this connected on the defensive end, a trip to the NBA Finals might be more than just a dream.
