2 pitchers receive big injury updates amid Yankees playoff push

The New York Yankees are making a run to the playoffs in 2026. They did not make any moves at the MLB trade deadline to improve the pitching staff, but the Yankees did just call up a prospect to join the bullpen.

Now, the Yankees could be getting two more arms to help the pitching staff back from injury soon, according to MLB.com.

The first is Kervin Castro, who has been on the IL with right elbow neuritis. He is expected to return before the end of the season. Castro has pitched in just five games so far this year, all in relief. He has pitched 6.1 innings, giving up just one run, leading to a 1.42 ERA. He had not pitched in the majors since 2022 prior to joining the Yankees this year.

Meanwhile, the Yankees could also be getting Clarke Schmidt, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, back this year.

“Has resumed playing catch after experiencing right forearm cramping during Aug. 4 live batting practice. Schmidt has strung together good days, but has yet to throw from a mound again,” the update read.

Schmidt has not pitched since 2025. He was 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP that year before going down with an injury. He has made 67 starts in 97 appearances in his career with the Yanks. Overall, he is 23-24 with a 3.82 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

The Yankees are 68-52 on the year, which places them in second place in the AL East. They are six games back from first, currently held by the Tampa Bay Rays. Still, the Yankees have the top wild card spot in the American League currently. The Yankees finish their series with the Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon.
