Joe Lacob drops mic on Valkyries’ WNBA title chances ‘without a Steph Curry’
The Golden State Valkyries look like one of the WNBA’s best teams in 2026. Golden State went on a nine-game winning streak in July, followed by their current five-game winning streak. Now the Valkyries are 24-9 and positioned to make a deep playoff run this fall. The sky could be the limit for one of the W’s youngest franchises.
Valkyries owner Joe Lacob made a bold statement about his team’s WNBA title chances in a recent interview.
“We have a shot this year to win it. I’m not saying we will, but we’re definitely close. We have the second-best record in the league. And we have a chance,” Lacob said, per Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard. “And I think we should all be very, very excited about all that. And by the way, more important than anything else, I’m just so proud of the job that everyone’s done. Not only picking the roster last year and continuing this year — again, continuity.”
Lacob explained that Golden State has proven they don’t need a superstar player to assemble a winning organization.
“It shows you, if you do the right things — we don’t have a Steph Curry. We don’t have a big-name star, really. Gabby [Williams is] the closest to it,” Lacob added. “But we’re really good because of all these other things we just talked about. And so, there’s different ways to win.”
Williams is certainly a great player, but she does not have the star power of a Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese. Still, that has not stopped the Valkyries from stacking win after win this season.
“We’re going to find out how far we get this year,” Lacob concluded. “Then I can really answer that question a little better.”
It will be exciting to see if the Valkyries can continue dominating their opponents down the stretch this season.
Next up for the Valkyries is a home game against the Wings. That matchup tips off at 10PM ET on August 17th from Ballhalla.
