The Minnesota Vikings entered training camp expecting their secondary to be built around established veterans and Brian Flores’ intricate pressure packages. Charles Demmings, though, has emerged as the player hardly anybody saw coming. The cornerback has repeatedly stood out during padded practices. Coming off a transformative cycle of roster trimming, the Vikings systematically constructed a leaner, faster and more adaptable squad. Assistant head coach Frank Smith arrived to work alongside head coach Kevin O’Connell. They also retained Brian Flores as defensive coordinator.

On the field, Minnesota brought quarterback competition into focus. Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy have battled for the starting job. Meanwhile, veteran receiver Jauan Jennings joined Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison in an increasingly intriguing pass-catching group.

Defensively, Flores spent the spring and summer continuing to build a versatile unit. The arrival of Jamal Adams added another intriguing chess piece to that equation. Charles Demmings has gone from an intriguing depth option to one of the most consistently praised defensive backs in Minnesota’s training camp. The Vikings selected Demmings with the 163rd overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They were attracted to his athleticism, versatility and physical approach. Still, nobody could have expected him to generate this much buzz this quickly.

Yet that is precisely what has happened. Demmings has repeatedly challenged Minnesota’s receivers during competitive team periods. He has shown quick feet and impressive closing speed while refusing to concede easy completions. His performances have been particularly noteworthy because he has not simply flashed once or twice. He has continued making plays throughout camp.

For example, Demmings stood out during a practice in which the Vikings’ quarterbacks struggled to consistently generate explosive completions. He was specifically credited with strong coverage work against the offense. That included a rep in which he helped prevent a completion to tight end Bryson Nesbit.

That consistency has transformed his story. Demmings has increasingly become someone the coaching staff has to account for when constructing its defensive personnel.

Ball skills

His impact has also not been limited to simply staying attached to receivers. Demmings is making plays on the football. Recent camp observations have highlighted multiple pass breakups. Those reportedly include a particularly impressive practice in which Demmings recorded two PBUs against throws from both McCarthy and Murray.

That type of production can accelerate a young defensive back’s path to meaningful playing time. Flores’ defense asks its backs to process information quickly and communicate effectively. They need to survive in situations where the quarterback knows exactly where the potential pressure is coming from. A corner who can consistently challenge throws without needing safety help gives Flores greater freedom to manufacture pressure elsewhere.

Demmings appears to be earning that trust. His aggressive approach also fits the personality of the defense. Rather than playing cautiously, he has demonstrated a willingness to challenge receivers and attack the football.

Jamal Adams adds another layer

Demmings’ rise becomes even more fascinating when viewed alongside Adams’ arrival. Adams brings nearly a decade of NFL experience. Last season with Las Vegas, he appeared in 17 games and spent significant time at linebacker. He gives Minnesota another player capable of moving around the formation.

That could allow Flores to put more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. If Demmings proves capable of handling isolated coverage responsibilities, Flores can deploy Adams in more creative roles. That is the ripple effect one unexpected cornerback can create.

Critical preseason

There is still a long way between becoming the darling of training camp and becoming a dependable contributor on Sundays. Demmings will have to prove that his coverage discipline holds up when offenses attack him repeatedly. He will need to tackle consistently and avoid the mental mistakes that can quickly erase impressive physical plays.

The early evidence, though, is impossible to dismiss. Minnesota’s first unofficial preseason depth chart still reflects a secondary with several established options. The team also continues to evaluate how its defensive pieces fit together. Demmings, however, has forced his name into that conversation.
