Lakers rumors: Ramona Shelburne gives eye-opening Chris Paul advice to Bob Iger after franchise purchase

The Los Angeles Lakers rocked the sports world on Wednesday. Owner Mark Walter sold the Lakers to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner for $12.5 billion. One year after Walter acquired the Lakers from Jeanne Buss for $10 billion, the franchise is scrambling.

Certain names will remain in place for now, such as head coach JJ Redick. Last September, Redick signed a two-year $45 million extension. However, it may not be the case for GM Rob Pelinka, as the new ownership would be tempted to go with someone of their philosophy.

On Thursday’s episode of NBA Today on ESPN, hosts Ramona Shelburne, Dave McMenamin, and David Dennis Jr. talked about this.

“JJ Redick got an extension after his rookie year as a head coach with the Lakers,” McMenamin said. “My understanding is it aligns his contract with Rob Pelinka’s…I think JJ Redick’s probably in a really good spot here…but will have to see where all this goes”

But on Brian Windhorst and the Hoop Collective, Shelburne suggested that the recently retired Chris Paul should be involved.

“Chris Paul is a very good friend of Bob Iger’s,” Shelburne said. “He just recently retired, so he’s available. I know he has some production company designs that he’s done. I think he’s got the world as his oyster, he can do whatever he wants, but if I’m Bob Iger, I think one of my first calls is to Chris Paul and asking how he would like to be involved, if he would like to be involved, etc. But I certainly think that’s a name to watch as we go forward here.”

In February, Paul retired after 21 seasons.
