Warriors’ Draymond Green calls to abolish salary cap as Kawhi Leonard ‘punishment’

The Golden State Warriors have had a painfully uneventful offseason, not doing anything else besides bringing back Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis, as well as drafting Yaxel Lendeborg. Meanwhile, the attention of the NBA world has been on the Kawhi Leonard scandal with the Los Angeles Clippers, which seems to have taken a turn for the worse over the last week.

The scandal has put the Toronto Raptors’ trade for Leonard on pause, and recently, Green weighed in on a radical solution that he thinks the NBA should reach as a result.

“If the punishments aren’t steep… Every player should be trying to do it… I ain’t mad at [Kawhi]… I think this raises the question about the salary cap… Let the punishment be getting rid of the salary cap,” said Green, per The Draymond Green Show on X, formerly Twitter.

There is a near-zero percent chance that such a solution is something the NBA would actually consider, especially considering the fact that the MLB is headed for a potential lockout this offseason due to the very fact that they don’t have a salary cap in place.

Eliminating the salary cap might prevent scandals for salary cap circumvention, such as Leonard’s with the Clippers, from arising, but it would create a whole new host of challenges, with more lucrative teams including Green’s Warriors being able to outspend the competition for premier free agents.

For now, it’s unclear what the NBA is going to do as a result of the investigation, but it’s safe to say that all parties involved hope things wrap up sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, the Warriors will learn their full schedule for the upcoming season on Thursday afternoon.
