Fever star Kelsey Mitchell just learned she was making WNBA history with scoring streak

Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell has been so focused on helping her team win that she was unaware her recent scoring surge had put her in the WNBA record books.

Mitchell has scored at least 20 points in 17 consecutive games, setting the WNBA single-season record for the longest such streak. The 30-year-old guard admitted Thursday that she only recently learned about the historic run.

“I just was (made) aware of the streaks and the numbers a little bit on TV the other day, so this is kind of new for me,” Mitchell told The Athletic’s James Boyd. “But just trying to keep the main thing the main thing, man for real. Sophie [Cunningham] just asked me and I was like, I don’t know… You just show up, you play, you try to do the right thing and you just let it flow and that’s a genuine response.”

Mitchell’s record comes during a career year for the Fever star. She is averaging 24.3 points, 2.7 assists, 1.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals across 33 games while playing 32.8 minutes per contest. Mitchell is also shooting career highs of 50.9% from the field and 44.5% from 3-point range.

Kelsey Mitchell continues historic run for Fever

Mitchell extended her streak during Indiana’s 106-92 win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday. She finished with 28 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 31 minutes while shooting 11 of 16 from the field and a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the arc.

Her production has helped Indiana reach 21-12 as the Fever continue positioning themselves for the postseason.

Mitchell will have an opportunity to extend her historic streak to 18 games when Indiana hosts the Dallas Wings (20-14) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ION.

The matchup will be the Fever’s final home game before beginning a five-game road trip Sunday against the Atlanta Dream (20-12).
