When did Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers know he wanted to return to Pittsburgh?

Recently, it was announced that quarterback Aaron Rodgers would officially return to the Pittsburgh Steelers for another year. The move reunites Rodgers with his old Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who took over for Mike Tomlin following last season.

Now, it has been revealed when Rodgers knew he wanted to return to play another year with the Steelers.

“Aaron Rodgers said he decided to come back after the NFL Draft. He said this process was different than last year’s, that there was legitimate doubt that he’d return. But, ultimately decided he wanted to play again,” reported DK Pittsburgh Sports on X, formerly Twitter, citing information from Chris Halicke.

Overall, Rodgers had a mostly solid season with the Steelers last year, at times looking very much his age, but at others, finding ways to turn back the clock, including during Pittsburgh’s regular season finale win against the Baltimore Ravens, which punched their ticket to the playoffs.

Unfortunately, Rodgers suffered through one of the worst games of his career when he got there, getting completely shut down by the Houston Texans’ vaunted defensive unit, with some fans wondering if the pick six he threw at the end of that game would be the final image of the future Hall of Famer on an NFL field.

However, his decision to return solidifies that this will not be the case, and now, the Steelers will look for ways to take the next step after several years of early playoff exits in recent seasons.

The Steelers’ 2026 season is slated to get underway in early September with a home game against the Atlanta Falcons.
