Shaq wanted to join the Avengers but Marvel saw one big problem

Shaquille O’Neal spent years trying to add the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a résumé that already included a turn as a DC superhero. His size was not the problem. His fame was.

Speaking with Variety while promoting his “Dunkman” league, O’Neal revealed that Marvel declined his push for an “Avengers” appearance because audiences would immediately see Shaq rather than the character.

“I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers,’” O’Neal said. According to him, studio officials appreciated the idea but believed fans would shout, “Hey, that’s Shaq!” as soon as his face appeared.

The 54-year-old first publicly campaigned for a place in the franchise during a 2018 interview with EW. Despite portraying the title character in 1997’s “Steel,” O’Neal never crossed into Marvel’s world and will not appear in December’s “Avengers: Doomsday.”

Shaq discovers the cost of being Shaq

O’Neal said the issue extends beyond Marvel. He wants more action parts, but leading Hollywood executives have told him that his celebrity overwhelms any fictional identity he tries to adopt.

“I would love to do more action roles,” he explained, adding that casting directors consider him “too big” for moviegoers to accept him as someone else.

That enormous public persona continues to work elsewhere. “Dunkman” calls itself the first professional league dedicated to dunking, with international contestants pursuing a $500,000 prize. TNT will air the finals on Aug. 25.

Marvel can explain gods, aliens and entire multiverses. Convincing audiences that Shaq is not Shaq apparently proved too ambitious.
