Usain Bolt registers to join Sunday League team filled with Premier League cult heroes

Usain Bolt is set to return to football with Wythenshawe FC Veterans.

The legendary sprinter ventured into the sport soon after he called time on his track career, which delivered eight Olympic gold medals.

An avid Manchester United fan, Bolt revealed his dream of playing for the club professionally after retiring from track and field.

Whilst this opportunity never arose, he has trained with clubs such as Central Coast Mariners and Borussia Dortmund.

Bolt has also made multiple appearances at Soccer Aid, but is now on course for club football.

On the Football Association Full-Time League Administration website, Wythenshawe’s veteran side have him listed as a player.

They compete in the Cheshire Veterans Football League and will enter the new season as holders.

Also named on their player list are numerous former Premier League stars, including former England international Emile Heskey.

Marc Albrighton and Danny Drinkwater, who were part of the iconic Leicester City side that won the 2015/16 title, also feature.

As does Joleon Lescott, who has two Premier League winner’s medals with Manchester City.

Former United captain Antonio Valencia is also involved, with Papiss Cisse and Stephen Ireland among the names too.

Wythenshawe Vets will begin their season on September 20 away to Old Stretfordians Gregorians.

Is Bolt primed for Wythenshawe Vets?

Speaking to talkSPORT earlier this year, Bolt made it clear that if an opportunity to play for the team was available, he’d take it.

“Listen, I’m ready,” he stated. “I’m ready. If I get into some shape, I’m ready to go.”

Bolt still holds the world record for the fastest record time in a 100m sprint – 9.58 seconds, which he set at the 2009 World Championships.

It means that, if he was to play on the wings for Wythenshawe Vets, they could be staring at another league title.

However, now aged 40, he’s unlikely to possess the same speed that made him the fastest man on Earth.
