Would Steelers’ Joey Porter Jr. trade be grave mistake or savvy decision as CB market explodes?
Pittsburgh Steelers are at a crossroads with Joey Porter Jr., as a handful of teams are being linked with the cornerback. With how things currently stand, the Blitzburgh could either offer an extension or part ways and let him enter the market.
But while talking about both of these scenarios, is a trade consideration even making sense for the Steelers? Would they really consider a breakup with JPJ amid a soaring CB market? Or would it be a grave mistake?
“Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. is a name multiple teams around the NFL have wondered about as a potential trade target, per sources. JPJ is in the final year of his rookie contract, and with where the CB market is, teams have wondered if Pittsburgh could ultimately be open to a move with the Pro Bowl caliber corner,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz recently tweeted.
Porter Jr., who has been away from NFL action due to a back injury, is said to be allegedly testing the waters. Multiple reports also mention that he is keeping his cards close to his chest while he waits for a long-term commitment offer. However, things could be tricky if he is really considering it.
The California-born star is in the last year of his rookie contract. Any potential trade that the Steelers would consider could be structured around a high first-round pick in it. A couple of teams could make the cut in that case.
But none of the reports have clearly mentioned that the Pittsburgh front office is entertaining any such phone calls talking about a trade.
With a new coaching structure underway after Mike McCarthy’s appointment, a trade on the go looks very much on the horizon. Because if the Steelers had to commit to a long-term plan with Porter Jr., his recent run-in with an injury could have made less sense.
On the other side of the conversation, his last NFL season was nothing short of what could be called a productive year. In 14 games he played for the Steelers during the 2025 NFL season, he started all of them. Additionally, his career-high 14 pass deflections also came during the same past season, while also finishing with 52 tackles and one interception.
While it was considerably enticing for teams on the lookout, it is his injury status and a lack of activity that could play in favour of those enquiring to land him.
However, we would still wait to see how things go and who puts the final nail in the coffin before September 13. Watch this space for all the speculation and rumors involving the Pittsburgh Steelers and Joey Porter Jr.
