Scottie Scheffler reveals Tour Championship status after brutal hand, foot, mouth disease battle

Scottie Scheffler is set to play this week at the Tour Championship. He won the FedEx St. Jude Championship two weeks ago, before finishing 12th at the BMW Championship last weekend.

Last week, Scheffler struggled early in the tournament, shooting a 72 in the first round, after battling hand, foot, and mouth disease. Now, Scheffler is talking about his status ahead of the Tour Championship, per Mark Schlabach of ESPN.

“Good. I’d say I’m at like 95%,” Scheffler said Wednesday. “The only thing [is] maybe just still a couple of sores in my throat. But other than that, I feel really good.”

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that normally affects children under the age of five. Although rare, it can be passed to adults, resulting in a fever, plus sores in the throat, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. Scheffler has two kids under the age of three who often travel with him.

“I think it’s always a balancing act,” Scheffler said. “I’m at a point in my life where, yeah, it’s really hard having two young kids and taking care of them. I think anyone with young kids can relate; you’re just tired literally all the time.”

Gary Woodland, a friend of Scheffler who finished tied for fourth at the BMW Championship, understands the pain of the disease.

“My kids have had it twice, and it is awful,” Woodland said. “That’s the stubbornness that Scottie has to fight through it last week and play. We all knew he was battling it.”

Woodland also tried to stay away from his friend due to the contagious nature of the illness.

Scheffler is set to tee off at the Tour Championship at 2 pm ET on Thursday.
