Giants’ Calvin Austin III done for season with his ‘serious knee injury’

Calvin Austin III’s first season with the New York Giants has ended before it even started after suffering a knee injury in training camp on Tuesday.

Austin was carted off the field after sustaining the non-contact injury during a one-on-one drill with Deonte Banks.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that the fifth-year wide receiver is out for the season.

“Calvin Austin’s ‘serious knee injury’ will keep him out for the season, per source. An unfortunate blow for the Giants slot receiver. He was going to play a significant role this season,” wrote Raanan on X.

Austin signed with the Giants in March on a one-year, $4.5 million contract after spending his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 27-year-old Austin suited up in New York’s victory over the Miami Dolphins, 26-3, in the preseason at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, tallying two receptions for 24 yards. He did not play in their loss to the Minnesota Vikings, 13-10, at MetLife Stadium last week.

It is the second time Austin will sit out an entire campaign after being sidelined by a foot injury in his rookie year. He was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round in 2022.

Austin was expected to start for the Giants alongside Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton. With his season-ending injury, his spot will likely go to Odell Beckham Jr., who returned to New York in June after his one-year stop with the Miami Dolphins.
