Aaron Judge’s rib and 4 Yankees’ injuries that will shape 2026 World Series outlook

The New York Yankees currently lead the American League Wild Card and are in second place in the American League East division. They will not have any trouble reaching the postseason. Reaching the World Series is realistic as well given how weak the AL is at the moment — although there are some sneaky contenders who could make things interesting. Winning the World Series will be especially difficult given how many talented National League teams there are right now, however. Whichever ball club emerges from the NL will have a tremendous opportunity to win the Fall Classic.

Many teams around the MLB world are dealing with injuries, and the Yankees are no different. Aaron Judge’s rib injury could ultimately determine just how far New York can go in the postseason. However, there are plenty of other injury situations to monitor on this ball club.

Let’s take a look at five Yankees’ injuries that may shape the team’s 2026 World Series outlook.

Aaron Judge (rib)

Judge is working his way back from a rib injury. He has a stress fracture of his first rib on his right side — an injury that has kept him out since early June.

The good news is that the Yankees are still expecting Judge to return before the end of the regular season. Judge should have at least some time to get some MLB games in before entering the postseason.

Judge is the Yankees most important player and they will need him to play up to his expectations if they want to win their first World Series since the 2009 season.

Max Fried (elbow)

Fried is trending in the right direction and a recent report even suggested he could return as soon as the Yankees’ upcoming weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. The southpaw is battling back from a left elbow bone bruise.

Of course, anytime the words “elbow injury” and “pitcher” are used in the same sentence, teams automatically proceed with extreme caution. Barring any setbacks, however, it seems as if Fried should be alright.

The Yankees’ pitching has been their strength this season. They will need that to continue in the postseason. Carlos, Gerrit Cole and Cam Schlittler are quality hurlers, but having Fried available only makes the rotation stronger.

Giancarlo Stanton (calf)

The first two injury updates we mentioned in this story were optimistic for the most part. Fried is expected to return soon and Judge could return before the playoffs. Stanton’s calf injury situation, however, is trending in a different direction.

Stanton was previously recovering from a right calf strain but recently suffered a left calf strain while running the bases. Stanton could miss the rest of the season — although nothing is official.

Stanton may not be the player he once was, but the Yankees’ lineup has had ups and downs this season. They would benefit from Stanton’s power in the lineup. He will be missed if his calf injury does indeed keep him out for the rest of the year.

Ryan McMahon (thumb)

McMahon is not a star with the Yankees but he’s still an impactful player. He is currently dealing with a sprained left thumb. It seems as if McMahon could return in September.

The infielder provides the Yankees with some left-handed power to go along with defensive versatility. He is known as a third baseman but McMahon can play second and first base as well. Having him available in the postseason would give the Yankees a boost. It seems as if he will indeed be ready for October baseball assuming no setbacks occur.

Clarke Schmidt (Tommy John surgery recovery)

Schmidt could realistically be the X-factor in the postseason. Everyone knows who the Yankees’ best pitchers are. MLB fans also know that starters do not always last as long in playoff games at times.

Schmidt is likely going to serve as a reliever once he returns from his Tommy John surgery — with his return potentially coming in September. Schmidt could potentially enter games in the middle innings during the playoffs and give the Yankees multiple innings.

Of course, it remains to be seen how effective he will be after returning from Tommy John surgery. If Schmidt can perform well, he would give the Yankees a crucial boost.
