Packers GM Brian Gutekunst reveals Josh Jacobs backup plan in case of suspension

Josh Jacobs was arrested in May on potential domestic abuse charges. While charges have not been formally made, Jacobs could still be punished by the NFL.

Now, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst is revealing the plan in case of a suspension, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Gutekunst was asked if the Packers would be keeping an extra running back in case of a suspension.

“We could. You usually keep 3 or 4 running backs, and I think we have enough to do that,” Gutekunst said.

He also noted that it is easy to elevate a running back off the practice squad if need be as well. Regardless, it will be difficult to replace Jacobs. He ran for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. MarShawn Lloyd is currently the backup, but he has just six carries for 15 yards in his career, coming back in 2024. Lloyd has dealt with some injury issues, but the team is becoming more confident in him.

“We’re starting to feel a lot more confident that he’s going to be fine. But you still have to be cautious. As much as you want to just jump in and just keep feeding him and keep feeding him, I think that part of it is still a work in process,” Packers running backs coach Ben Sirmans said.

Chris Brooks and Pierre Strong Jr. are also on the roster and could both be kept if Jacobs is going to be suspended.

Beyond the threat of suspension, Jacobs is also dealing with a groin injury. He is expected to go through some limited team work in practice this week, but may not play in the final preseason game. The Packers face the Cardinals on Friday night.
