Padres get big Casey Mize update after recent injury scare
The San Diego Padres are hoping that Casey Mize will be just fine by the time he walks back to the mound next. He is lined up to pitch on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. That start is in doubt after tripping on the dugout steps during his last start on Saturday night.
“It’s a little swollen, tender, but woke up pretty encouraged with how I’m feeling. We’re just going to treat it a ton, do a lot of exercises, and then reevaluate — I think probably daily. But a little bit encouraged on how I’m waking up feeling today,” Mize said on Sunday.
Mize will throw a bullpen session Wednesday after playing catch the last few days. If the bullpen session goes well, he may not need to miss a start because the Friars have a day off Thursday. If the Padres do want to move Mize back one day to Saturday, they have the depth in the pen to open the series against the Rays with a bullpen game.
Mize has struggled for the most part since joining the Padres at the deadline from the Detroit Tigers. In four starts, he has seen his ERA rise to 3.97, and it’s at 7.00 with the Padres. He’s allowed five home runs and 14 runs total. This is definitely not what the Padres had imagined when they traded for him, but they are hoping that he will settle down soon and be a solid factor in their playoff run.
The good news is that Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta are expected to start a game at some point in September. If those two are healthy down the stretch, that is a massive upgrade for the Padres.
