Chelsea send email urging fans to bin sectarian chant sung during Fulham clash

Chelsea have warned fans they could face an ‘indefinite suspension’ should they be found guilty of singing a sectarian chant.

In an email sent to supporters, the Blues hailed their ‘passion and backing’ during the 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday.

However, the club confirmed it received reports a ‘small portion’ of the travelling fans engaged in sectarian chanting.

“We would like to strongly remind all supporters that the club does not condone any chants which discriminate against a protected characteristic,” Chelsea wrote.

“Any supporter found guilty of this will face the strongest possible action, which could include indefinite suspension from attending all Chelsea matches and ejection from the stadium.

“Following previous club fines and charges for chants of this nature, and to ensure that we create a welcoming matchday experience for all, we ask supporters to take collective responsibility and remain vigilant in helping us to tackle discriminatory chanting.”

Chelsea were fined over £8,000 in January 2025 for singing an anti-IRA chant during a 5-1 win over Shamrock Rovers in the Conference League.

How Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham unfolded

The Blues began Monday’s contest against Fulham in brilliant fashion, with Joao Pedro putting the visitors in front within the opening minute.

However, Chelsea’s lead lasted just over 20 minutes as Joshua King equalised.

It was a moment Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez would rather forget as he failed to make what appeared to be a simple save and instead dived too late.

Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea earlier this summer for a British record £117million, restored the visitors’ lead just before half time before Cole Palmer doubled the advantage in the 49th minute.

Gonzalo Garcia pulled one back for the hosts five minutes later, but the Blues held on for all three points.

Speaking after the contest, Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso believed the performance was the perfect platform to build from.

“It feels very good for sure, and you know how tough it is to win any Premier League game, any Premier League away game, but we were prepared for an intense game,” Alonso said.

“I think it’s been a very professional, solid performance, with maturity, matching different momentum during the game.

“We got the lead quite early, we had chances to score the second goal a few times, and after the equalise we went through ten minutes when we had not chosen the right [way] to press and the movement, but we have corrected well this, and in the second half we have felt comfortable without the ball controlling the game.

“I think it’s a performance to build for the future, improve things for sure, but it’s a good first day.”

Alonso will look to make it two wins from two on Thursday when Chelsea host Luton Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm.
