Mets’ Marcus Semien’s injury timeline deals another devastating blow to New York
The New York Mets, who have been dealing with attrition all season long, took a major hit Monday when Marcus Semien’s hip flexor strain was officially classified as a Grade 3 injury, the most serious classification for a muscle tear.

Semien tried to power through the pain before the injury became too constraining to ignore. The strain severely limited his movement while shut down and the Mets’ medical staff had to make the call. The veteran infielder is looking at a minimum of four to six weeks on the injured list, a timeline that could stretch deep into the heart of the summer schedule.
To put that timetable in perspective, just look at Tyrone Taylor’s recent stint on the IL. Taylor strained a hip flexor, graded as a 1 to 2, far less serious than Semien’s Grade 3, and still sat out 28 days before returning to the lineup. If a lesser injury cost Taylor close to a month, Semien’s road back figures to be considerably longer and less clear.
So, timing couldn’t be worse for New York. Semien was brought in to add some stability and veteran leadership up the middle of the order, and his loss leaves a hole that the Mets could find difficult to fill from within. With playoff seeding still very much up for grabs, each loss without a lineup anchor of Semien’s caliber carries real consequences.
The Mets front office is under increasing pressure to fill the roster hole through a trade or a minor league option before the situation gets worse. New York has navigated adversity this season, but losing a cornerstone player for four to six weeks is the kind of setback that can quietly derail a contender’s October dreams.
