Lane Kiffin defends LSU football signing ex-NFL players with wild spin

Recently, the LSU football program has been at the center of attention when Dae’Quan Wright opted to return to the program despite having been a member of multiple NFL teams during training camp. The move has reignited debate about how strict college eligibility requirements should or shouldn’t be as the lines between ameteur and professional continue to blur.

Recently, newly minted LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin stopped by ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show to give his two cents on the debate.

“I don’t think professionals should come back to college sports and college football particularly.. This isn’t professionals who have gone and played seasons or just randomly filed an injunction in a state to become eligible,” said Kiffin, per Pat McAfee on X, formerly Twitter.

As Kiffin referenced, Wright, and other players who have followed a similar path, have not actually played games at the NFL level, but some fans still feel that the fact that they were on training camp rosters and competing in professional practices should be enough to disqualify them from returning to school.

With NIL money and the transfer portal both becoming major hot topics in the college football world in recent years, it was seemingly only a matter of time until this kind of story started to emerge, and the Tigers are more than happy to be the beneficiaries of Wright’s return to school.

Kiffin is looking to justify his controversial decision to leave Ole Miss for LSU last season when he and the Tigers take the field in 2026, beginning on September 5 with a marquee home game against the Clemson Tigers.
