Ravens OC reveals what he’s learned from Ben Johnson, Sean Payton

Following a major organizational shakeup, the Baltimore Ravens appointed head coach Jesse Minter to take over the defense and handed offensive responsibilities to Declan Doyle in an effort to revitalize their attack. Throughout the preseason, Doyle has primarily operated from the coaches’ booth instead of the sideline, orchestrating the offense from above during a 13-3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. According to Ravens team reporter Ryan Mink, Minter confirmed that working from high above the field is Doyle’s preferred vantage point for analyzing defensive alignments leading up to Week 1.

As Doyle prepares for his first season calling plays in Baltimore, he attributes much of his tactical development to his experience working alongside two prominent offensive minds: Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. In an interview with ESPN’s Kevin Clark on X, Doyle detailed the daily standards he adopted while coaching with Johnson in Chicago: “He’s very demanding regarding standards. Whatever we agree upon as ‘this is what we want to be,’ he holds everybody to that every day… that’s really what I’ve tried to emulate.”

In a subsequent post on X, Clark shared insights on what Doyle learned from Payton during their time together in New Orleans and Denver: “He walks into a room and takes over the room. It’s the same way when he calls a game. There’s something to that— the playcaller having a ton of confidence. As a coach, you’re a teacher but also an actor.” Doyle explained that Payton’s commanding presence and confidence taught him that a playcaller must project absolute authority and conviction with every call.

By combining Johnson’s meticulous operational standards with Payton’s fearless bravado, Doyle aims to develop an aggressive and explosive identity for Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ revamped offense.
