David Moyes snaps back at reporter over ‘dead stupid’ question

David Moyes snapped back at a reporter’s question regarding his desire to win cup competitions with Everton this season.

Moyes was visibly annoyed after being asked how important success in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup is for the Toffees.

Everton start their Carabao Cup campaign on Wednesday night when they take on Preston in the second round.

Ahead of that game at Deepdale, Moyes spoke to the media in his press conference to preview the midweek action.

But one question in particular launched him into a quick rant against journalists that he labelled ‘dead stupid’.

Moyes snaps back at journalist

Moyes was asked: “How important are the cups to you this season?”

And that seemed to hit a particular nerve for the Everton boss, who then hit back at the reporter.

“I think it’s a question that every journalist asks every manager,” he began in reply.

“In some ways, I think are those journalists dead stupid? Do you think none of the managers want to win the cups?

“Of course we all want to win the cups… so the answer is yes, the cups are hugely important.”

“Would it be more important to win a cup than to stay in the Premier League?” he then asked back to the journalist.

The journalist quickly replied no, with Moyes hinting that he values survival in the top flight over success in the cup by adding: “So, there we go. You’ve half answered it.”

When did Everton last win a trophy?

Moyes may be right that a lot of managers are asked the same question about the importance of cup success.

But for Everton, the Carabao Cup and FA Cup have some extra significance considering their trophy drought.

The Toffees have not won a major trophy since 1995, which was a success in the FA Cup.

Fans are sure to want to end their 31-year wait for glory, so they will expect big things from their side each year.

Last season, a loss to Wolves in the Carabao Cup second round ended their journey early, with Moyes now under pressure to go further.

However, if he values league football above the cup, could Everton be in for another year of no silverware?
