Paul Scholes tells Bruno Fernandes to ‘keep mouth shut’ as two other Manchester United stars called out

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes was not in the mood to hear Bruno Fernandes’ frustrations over the shock loss to Hull City.

The Red Devils slipped to a 2-0 defeat against the Tigers last weekend, marking the first time they’d been beaten by a newly-promoted side to start the campaign.

Worryingly, United boasted 72 per cent possession and fired off 20 shots but could not find a way past a stubborn Hull defence.

In the aftermath of the result, United captain Fernandes bemoaned the team made the ‘same mistakes as we did last season’, something Hull’s players were well placed to take advantage of.

“We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set plays and not concede these types of goals,” Fernandes added.

“Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment.”

But Scholes, speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football, felt Fernandes was better served by staying silent, at least publicly.

“I’d be interested to know what (Fernandes) means by that,” Scholes said.

“What mistakes were they giving set-piece goals away?

“Especially when you perform the way he did as well, I think it’s probably best to keep your mouth shut, because he didn’t have his best performance either, and there was quite a few of them like that.”

Co-host Paddy McGuinness added Luke Shaw even admitted United could have prepared better, prompting a cutting response from Scholes.

“Luke Shaw always says something,” Scholes said.

“That’s a slight on your staff, that’s a slight on your manager.

“If one of your players was saying that, f****** hell, you’d have him in Monday morning wouldn’t you, ‘What do you mean by that?'”

Shaw and Fernandes weren’t the only United players in Scholes’ crosshairs, with Harry Maguire also coming in for criticism.

Scholes was especially bemused by Maguire’s role during Hull’s opener, as the United defender appeared to hold back teammate Noussair Mazraoui.

Had either Maguire or Mazraoui been free, they could have made a play to prevent Semi Ajayi’s goal.

“I think he’s (Maguire) just lost his bearings or something, I don’t know,” Scholes said.

“I don’t think he’s looking at the players, he’s looking at the ball, isn’t he?

“The only thing I can think is that he’s lost his bearings and he’s looking at the ball and he could feel somebody in front of him, and he’s just gone like that.”

United will now look to shake off the humiliating loss to Hull when they return to action on Sunday against Ipswich Town.
