Padres minor league coach detained by ICE released, back with family

Last week, Sam Blum of The Athletic reported that Padres minor league coach Oswaldo Pirela was detained by ICE at an airport in Texas.

Here was the Padres’ initial response to the situation.

“We recently became aware of the detainment of minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela in El Paso, Texas,” the Padres said last Monday. “We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time.”

Dennis Lin, The Athletic’s Padres writer, reported on Tuesday that Pirela was released on bond and is back home with his family.

The Padres released another statement, but will no longer comment about the situation.

“We are pleased that Oswaldo Pirela has been released on bond and reunited with his family,” the Padres said in a statement issued to The Athletic. “Out of respect for his privacy and the ongoing matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

Pirela remained with ICE for about a week after he “overstayed his welcome,” according to a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security. Pirela was on a work trip when he was detained at the airport. Lin also reported that Pirela is seeking asylum and is a resident of Peoria, Arizona.

“Pirela’s wife, Kemberly Avila, said last week that Pirela and her family have pending asylum applications, while Jorge Pirela said his brother was not carrying his work permit when he was detained.”

The hope is that this can be kept in the past and the entire Padres organization and Pirela’s family can move on.
