Jose Fernandez slams ‘selfish’ Wings’ locker room after loss to Lynx

After starting the season with a big win against the Indiana Fever, the Dallas Wings have lost their past two games. Their latest loss came against the Minnesota Lynx, and first-year head coach Jose Fernandez was not pleased with the team’s attitude.

Fernandez spoke about how the Wings may have some selfish players in the locker room.

“There’s selfishness in this locker room… Don’t get upset if you think that you should’ve played more… Or you didn’t get the shots that you think you should have gotten,” Fernandez said via Landon Thomas. “Really good teams, they don’t give a s–t about that. You know what they give a shit about? They give a s–t about winning.”

It’s uncertain who Fernandez could be talking about, but if you did the process of elimination, it probably wasn’t Paige Bueckers or Arike Ogunbowale, who played 30 minutes and had the most shots on the team.

It may have been one of the bench players, or he could have been talking about a group of players. Nonetheless, it’s very telling that things like this are being said at the beginning of the season.

The Wings were able to select Azzi Fudd with the No. 1 pick this season, and she’s come off the bench in the two games she’s played in so far. In their loss against the Lynx, she finished with the most minutes off the bench and scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting.

As the season goes on, there is a chance that she makes her way into the starting lineup, but it doesn’t look like Fernandez is just going to hand her the role; she’s going to have to earn it.

“We’re easing her in to being a bigger part in getting more minutes,” Fernandez said.
