Jordan vs LeBron? Mets’ Luke Weaver debates Nolan McLean vs Cam Schlittler

With the Subway Series about to start between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, one debate is which team has the best young pitcher. While some are categorizing the Mets as having an awful season, one bright side has been Nolan McLean, as fellow teammate Luke Weaver gives his thoughts on the discussion with him and Yankees’ Cam Schlittler.

Weaver would give a slight advantage to McLean over Schlittler, even likening the conversation to the endless debate over the greatest basketball player between Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

“It’s kind of like a Michael Jordan-LeBron thing,” Weaver said, via The Athletic. “I’m not saying they’re them. But they both bring a different dynamic to the game, even though they play the same position. … They are two incredibly talented young pitchers who attack hitters with a similarly relentless pursuit, but with a very different arsenal.”

“I will make it a 0.1 fraction to Nolan,” said Weaver, holding his index finger and thumb as close as possible. “It’s a 0.1 fraction only because I respect what Cam has and what his future holds.”

So far this season, the 24-year-old in McLean has recorded a 2.92 ERA to go along with 64 strikeouts and a 2-2 record in nine starts, while the 25-year-old Schlittler has posted a 1.35 ERA with 59 strikeouts and a 5-1 record, also in nine starts. However, Weaver is more stunned by how McLean throws the ball.

“I’ve never seen a ball move the way Nolan makes the ball move,” Weaver said.

Some see the ceiling higher with McLean, including an unnamed AL Scout telling The Athletic that he would take McLean over Schlittler.

“I am going to gush about McLean whenever he comes up,” the AL scout said. “I am taking him, and this isn’t a slight over Cam because I would take Nolan over every pitcher outside of a handful, if it’s that many.”

At any rate, there’s no denying that the two pitchers are set to be top players in the entire majors, despite the endless debate that is to follow.
