Jake Rogers nearly slips up after epic Red Sox debut following Tigers trade

Backup catcher Jake Rogers, acquired in the Adley Rutschman trade, had to step up and play a role for the Boston Red Sox on Thursday in their bonkers 12-11 win over the Chicago White Sox after 13 innings.

Connor Wong had to be replaced with a pinch-runner, thrusting Rogers into action in the 10th inning. Rogers ended up drawing a walk in the 10th to load the bases (he failed to score), and he then drove in the tying run in the 12th (via a sacrifice fly) to set up Caleb Durbin’s heroics in the 13th.

After the game, Rogers expressed his feelings towards joining a scorching hot Red Sox team. In doing so, he slipped up and almost mentioned his former employer instead of his current one before catching himself.

“To see these guys perform the way they are, I mean, it’s a fun group to be a part of and a great time to be in Detr — or, sorry, Boston. Caught myself there,” Rogers said, via Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.

Rogers still might be in the process of gathering his bearings after an eventful trade deadline saw him move twice in the span of a week. Rogers went from the Detroit Tigers to the Baltimore Orioles and then to the Boston Red Sox finally, as he was included as a throw-in in the Rutschman trade.

He had spent the entirety of his career up to 2026 with the Tigers, and then he played just three games for the Orioles before he was dealt to the Red Sox. Rogers is expected to be the third-string catcher in Beantown once Rutschman returns, as one would think that Wong would be the one who will be taking on the backup role.

Rogers has a history of being a strong defensive catcher and he has shown that he can come up clutch for the Red Sox, so perhaps there’s a role for him on the big-league roster even when Rutschman comes back from the injured list.
