The League One season does not get under way until August 15, but all 24 third-tier sides begin their competitive campaigns in the first round of the EFL Cup this weekend.

Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage will face each other twice in the league this term, but their first meeting comes in knockout football. Both will be looking to get off to a positive start in 2026/27, even though the league is the priority.

Having flirted with promotion the previous year, Wycombe slumped to a mid-table finish last time out. 

They got off to a poor start under Mike Dodds, and although the situation improved significantly after Michael Duff was handed the reins, Wycombe fell short in their bid for a play-off place.

That is the target once more at Adams Park, where the fans are hopeful that a full pre-season under Duff will make Wycombe competitive from the get-go. 

There were certainly positives to take from the Chairboys’ narrow 2-1 defeat by Premier League side Ipswich Town in their final friendly of the summer.

Stevenage did make the play-offs in 2025/26, only to lose both legs to Stockport County. Finishing in the top six was a solid achievement for a team that had been tipped for mid-table mediocrity at best, but it is far from certain that Stevenage will be able to replicate that feat.

Key men Charlie Goode and Harvey White have both departed in the summer window, while manager Alex Revell has voiced his frustrations with Boro’s recruitment difficulties.

Still, Stevenage exceeded expectations last season and it would therefore be foolish to write them off before a ball has been kicked.

We will get an initial look at how the two teams are shaping up on Friday night as the EFL Cup gets under way.

This is a tough game to call and no result would go down as a surprise, but Wycombe Wanderers are the likelier victors.

Home advantage is one factor in their favour. These two teams faced off at Adams Park in February and Wycombe ran out 3-1 winners.

Stevenage’s squad has probably got weaker over the summer and it could take them a while to get going this season.

Despite finishing in the play-off places, Stevenage often struggled to put the ball in the back of the net last term.

Only three teams scored fewer goals than Alex Revell’s team, who struck 49 times in their 46 matches.

Revell will have been working hard to improve Stevenage’s attacking patterns this summer, and the club’s fans will hope to see evidence of progress in that area this weekend.

Cauley Woodrow spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers from Luton Town, and the move has been made permanent this summer.

That is good news for the Chairboys, who benefitted from the nine goals and four assists he provided in 37 League One appearances last time out.

Woodrow will be a key part of any play-off push for Wycombe, but first he will be aiming to fire them into the second round of the EFL Cup.

Stevenage have a new-look defence this season and those players will be tested by Woodrow on Friday.
