‘We’ll be laughing’ – Tottenham told to let Arsenal sign star in unthinkable transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to let bitter rivals Arsenal sign Cristian Romero this summer.

The Gunners have emerged as surprise candidates to land the Spurs captain ahead of the new season.

Mikel Arteta’s side are reported to have shown interest in Romero, who is likely to leave Tottenham before the transfer window closes.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal have joined Atletico Madrid in eyeing the Argentina defender.

Italian champions Inter Milan are also in contention for the 28-year-old’s signature.

The Serie A giants’ sporting director confirmed last month that talks had been held.

Arsenal’s desire to sign a new centre-back comes with William Saliba sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Saliba suffered a back injury in France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain.

‘Let them have him’

Spurs fan and former Premier League player Darren Ambrose has now told his club to let Romero join Arsenal.

Reacting to the news alongside Majestic on The Sports Bar, the talkSPORT co-host said: “Let them have him… liability. Give Micky van de Ven the captaincy.”

Ambrose continued: “Surely they wouldn’t, he’s got a contract until 2029 so he won’t be cheap.

“It’s different to the Sol Campbell situation. If they want him they have to pay big money to get him and then we’ll be laughing when he loses them every couple of games with a red card.”

Romero signed a new four-year deal through to the summer of 2029 in August last year.

However, a second-successive 17th place finish in the Premier League has seen talk of a departure resurface this summer.

It follows a season marred by ill-discipline for the World Cup winner.

Romero was sent off twice in 23 league appearances last term as well as receiving ten yellow cards.

Since joining Spurs in 2021, he has been shown six red cards across all competitions.

Van de Ven latest

Whilst Romero could leave Spurs before the window closes, Micky van de Ven appears set to stay at the club.

talkSPORT understands the defender is expected to sign a new deal following positive discussions.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi has played a key role in convincing the 25-year-old to commit his future to the club.

Meanwhile, Van de Ven’s priority has been to extend his stay since Spurs achieved Premier League survival in May.

Talks have since accelerated, with the club hopeful an agreement will be finalised this month.
