Mets have 1 bonkers reason to believe a playoff miracle is coming

After the New York Mets completed the sweep against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday afternoon with their impressive 13-6 win, the team is stacking up some good wins since the trade deadline on Monday. As Mets fans want to believe something special can come out of the disappointing season, this reporter points out one aspect that could keep the playoff hopes alive, though still unlikely.

MLB.com’s New York beat reporter Anthony DiComo took to social media to speak about the record the team has to get before the end of the regular season with 46 games left.

The 37-9 mark will be hard to reach, but it could help them punch their ticket for the postseason, as there have been five teams that have done it, one including the Cleveland Guardians in 2027, which had Mets’ star shortstop Francisco Lindor.

“If the Mets go 38-9 over their final 47 games, including today, they’ll probably make the playoffs,” DiComo wrote before Thursday’s win over Cleveland on X, formerly Twitter. “Hey, it’s been done! Five times in fact, most recently by Francisco Lindor, Jay Bruce and the 2017 Guardians.”

The sweep over Cleveland still makes New York undefeated since the trade deadline, as the team also completed a first by sweeping an opponent on the road.

At any rate, it remains to be seen if the Mets can fully turn around their season and achieve the record needed in the last 46 games of the season, as the ball club currently has a 50-66 record, which still puts them last in the NL East. New York is 11.5 games back of a wild-card spot as the next series starts on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
