Colts’ Daniel Jones puts Achilles concerns to rest with strong statement

How healthy will Daniel Jones be to start the season? That’s the burning question on Indianapolis Colts fans’ minds coming into the 2026 season. Jones suffered a torn Achilles tendon towards the end of the 2025 season, putting into question his ability to play this year. So far, though, things have been going swimmingly for the quarterback.

The biggest sign that Jones is fine has been his presence in the Colts’ training camp. It has only been a few weeks since the quarterback was cleared to fully participate in team drills. Yet, Jones has not missed a single practice since then. Whatever concerns fans may have about the quarterback’s Achilles have been answered over the last few weeks.

“I’ve felt good through the whole camp so far,” Jones said, per ESPN. “I knew I would. You try to push yourself in the rehab in preparation for camp, knowing what to expect. I felt really good and I stay on the recovery part of it to make sure I’m available and out here every day.”

That, combined with head coach Shane Steichen’s assessment of the quarterback earlier today, should excite Colts fans. Here’s what Steichen had to say about the Indy quarterback.

“We tried all the throws, we tried accuracy throws, all that stuff, and he’s on fire right now,” Steichen said. “It’s awesome to see.”

As for the backup position behind Jones, there seems to be no consensus yet on who will take the Colts’ backup QB job. Neither Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard has shown enough consistency to be picked for the role, according to Steichen.

“The guy that’s most consistent is going to win that job,” Steichen said. “Those guys are battling. It’s back and forth right now. There’s been flashes, but yeah, there’s work to be done for sure.”

This is a far cry from the 2025 offseason, when Jones first joined the Colts. At the time, Jones was viewed as a potential challenger to Richardson, but many expected the young quarterback to be the starter. However, Jones was named the starter before the start of the season, and he showed why early in the season. In the first two months of the year, the quarterback maintained a completion percentage above 70%, throwing 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
