Watch ex-Steelers HC Mike Tomlin make his NBC debut

Mike Tomlin did not inspire a ton of fan confidence during the end of his historic run with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the expectations are quite high for his new role as an NFL analyst for NBC. He officially made the transition from the sidelines to the desk during Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game.

Maria Taylor, the host of “Football Night in America,” gave the Super Bowl 43 champion a warm welcome before the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers collided in Canton, Ohio. Tomlin was gracious and complimentary to his new colleagues, whom include former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and Second-Team All-Pro defensive back Devin McCourty. He also spoke on what it is like to be away from NFL training camp for the first time in nearly 20 years.

“I don’t miss that dorm room in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where I spent a calendar year of my life,” Tomlin said, per the Awful Announcing X account. “But I do miss the men, the brotherhood, the camaraderie, the fighting together. But I gotta admit, I’m also enjoying the camaraderie I’m developing with this group.”

Tomlin was a steady presence during the broadcast. He interviewed Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, spoke glowingly about his mentor and idol Tony Dungy (the man he replaced on NBC) and also extended praise to new Steelers HC Mike McCarthy (the man who replaced him). Although there is speculation that he will return to the NFL after a mini-break, the Virginia native looks quite comfortable at his new job.

Mike Tomlin has a knack for turning a phrase, with sayings like “I want volunteers, not hostages” and “the standard is the standard” making him a highly intriguing addition to NBC’s team. He seems relaxed, smiling far more than fans were used to seeing over the last few years.

Though, one has to wonder how long it will take before he gets the itch to coach again.
