Red Sox’s crazy comeback to beat White Sox makes new MLB history

In the game that many are calling the best of the 2026 MLB season thus far, it was the Boston Red Sox that came out on top, 12-11, over the Chicago White Sox after a thrilling 13-inning duel. The Red Sox were down for most of the game and had to pull magical moments out of the hat over and over again, which they did.

And then in the 13th inning, when the White Sox could no longer retake the lead for what seemed like the umpteenth time on the night, the Red Sox brought it home with a walk-off winner from Caleb Durbin.

In fact, the White Sox led at some points from the ninth to the 12th inning, requiring the Red Sox to come up with an answer every time during extra innings. Boston did find the answers every single time, and in so doing, they became the first team in the modern era to score in five separate innings in the ninth inning or later in the same game, according to OptaSTATS on X.

In the ninth, the Red Sox were down to their final out, down by one run (7-6), even after Connor Wong led off the inning with a double. It was Wilyer Abreu who saved the day, driving Wong in with a single.

Chicago regained the lead in the 10th with a two-run Chase Meidroth dinger, but Andruw Monasterio and Anthony Seigler came up huge with RBIs to keep the game level in the bottom of the inning.

In the 11th, the Red Sox evened up the game yet again as Abreu drove in another run, this time with a sacrifice fly. And then in the 12th, Jake Rogers hit another sac fly for Boston to tie up the score.

Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello then shut the door on Chicago in the top of the 13th, recording a 1-2-3 inning. This then paved the way for Durbin to send Boston home happy.
